MARCO WITZIG
* Born in 1972, art educator, curator, assistant and archive HR Giger, lives in Zurich
Ever since Marco Witzig visited the Giger retrospective at the Seedamm Cultural Centre as a 12-year-old boy, he’s been fascinated with Hansruedi’s art. After studying economics for a few years in Neuchâtel and Brighton, Marco’s focus turned to art education -- while he amassed a comprehensive Giger collection at the same time. He carried out painstaking detective work to find pieces thought to be lost, and bought them for his collection whenever possible. Over the years, Marco executed more and more assistant duties for Hansruedi, recently curating or co-curating exhibitions of his for example.
In 2003, together with Matthias Belz, he began to organize and document Giger’s work. In some ways he picked up where Sandra Beretta had left off in the '90s. He tried to put Giger’s previous creations in order, or at least as much as humanly possible. In this way he and Matthias Belz were able to put together a comprehensive catalogue of Hansruedi Giger’s extensive work.
